about

Dave talks really ancient history:

“This is quite a special track for me. It was the first thing that we wrote together as a band, as far back as 1988!

Recently, when we came to record it, I think it was time to tidy it up and lose some of the dead wood. At one point, it was running at something like twenty minutes long.

I remember once we were headlining at a gig, and we played it along with another lengthy number called ‘Astral Messiah’ (about Space McSpace, the Space Guitarist from Outer Space, who comes down to Earth with his band, spraying his cosmic riffs to the masses, or anyone who’ll listen...) By the time we’d finished playing those two numbers the best part of an hour had gone by! It’s still sort of long now I suppose, but it feels snug, and I think all the parts work well together.

It was nice to dig it up and have a go at recording it, and hopefully, finally, get it down and sounding like what we could hear in our heads all those years ago.”

I can see you hiding in the corner of the room
Your blood red mouth sings a bright and merry tune
A short, flat yellow hat with orange plastic hair
Skulking in the shadows, you pretend that you’re not there

The mad man in the mountains has a tear in his eye
Flowers, cows, sheep and houses in the evening sky
Is he happy? Is he sad? Is he sane or is he mad?
The dawn brings rebirth and the youth he never had

Desert streams flow forever to the seven seas
The watcher in the water, the mist in the trees
Man of mirrors stranded in the distance of a dream
Reflection in the duck pond is not what it would seem

When you tune into my frequency
And listen to all I have to say
And when I tell you there’s no hope for you
Do you feel a little dismayed?
Well I guess that’s only natural
Can’t bring myself to blame you

You never knew my feelings
But Jesus...
Deep down I felt that way myself

You’ll never know
