about

Dan gives the lowdown:

“This was one of the first songs I wrote for the band.

Previously, there was a tendency for me to write songs that were over-complicated, so this song came from a couple of sustained chords over a simple pulse. It's only got two notes in it really, so I had gone from one extreme to the other.

The lyrics reflect a theme that I have in a few songs; the establishment, the government, conforming to 'the norm’. The notion that we're just the little guys along with lots of other little people who make up this enormous human machine – you decide if you want to stand up to it, or join in!”

lyrics

Part Of The Machine

I’ve lost my way
I don’t know what I’m doing here
Just caught in a breeze
Looking for what’s over there

It remains out of sight
Undercover till night
There’s no shade from the Sun
Have no choice but to run

There’s no sound but the noise
Of an echoing voice
It’s the voice of a man
Close your eyes but you can’t

’Cos your part of the machine

I’m lost in a breeze
And I’m feeling what I think is fear

And it’s all been a trap
And it’s asking too much to survive

You better watch what you say
But you’ve lost anyway
With these crimes of the air
You don’t have a prayer

And the shake of the dice
Is my only advice
You’re breathing your last
Take one breathless gasp

And you’re part of the machine
Yes, you’re part of the machine
