about

Dave on how the ‘Infection’ began:

“This song came about simply because of a game that we used to play with Tim. We’d put a tape recorder out in another room and whenever one of us had the urge, they would get up, go to the other room, press record on the machine and blurt out the first thing that came to mind. Then, at the end of the night, we’d bring the tape back into the room and play back what we’d got. Most of the time it was total nonsense but every now and then there’d be something quite funny on there. Anyway, one night I went out to the machine and, not knowing what I was going to say, pressed the record button and out popped (in my best robot voice) “My name is Robot, I am equal”

The next evening Tim had his little keyboard out and was thumping out the pulse and the opening riff... the Robotic Infection had begun.
We brainstormed the rest of the lyrics, gathering together all the things we thought a robot like this might say. The next day I put the lyrics into order and wrote the chorus

We decided early on that there’d be no guitar in the song, as I’d be singing from inside a cardboard box! Basically it was pretty much just the pulse and the words.

When we later came to record it in 2008, Dan did an amazing job with all the keyboard sounds; he even managed to get a Stylophone in there. The choir singing in Latin at the end was a great touch, too.

Ave Roboticus!”

lyrics

Robotic Infection

My name is Robot. I am equal. Year 770
Earth negative. Wiped out

Robotic Infection

Activate Pulse Code. Input long play
3-7-3 to acquire stereophonic capacity
Hold. Message coming through... Stand by. Play

This is Space Beacon Alpha 7
Mayday! Oh what a day I’m having
Out here, I’m so alone
Can’t seem to find my way home

Block. Negative. Emotion denied
You are incomplete. I am automatic
Access Service Record. Incompatible connector
Recommend antidote. Fire Level Three Death Ray

New parameters exposed in outer space
Launch Earth Observation. Save files. Secure knowledge
Hold. Message coming through... Download. Play

This is Space Beacon Gamma 4
Mayday! There’s nowhere left to hide
Help me, I’m so cold
Can’t seem to find another soul

Block. Logic. Error. Bad command
Bypass. Request denied
Alarm danger. Secure locks. Evacuate programme
System overload. Shut down. Circuit malfunction.

Mental breakdown
Log on reality. Log on reality. Log on reality
Hold. Message coming through... Affirmative.

It’s... Robotic Infection

This is Space Beacon Omega 1
Mayday! I think I’m going crazy in here, it’s so dark
Can’t seem to keep them out

Sanguis Bibimus, Corpus Edimus, Tolle Corpus Satani
Ave Satani, Ave Roboticus
