about
Dave explains his inspiration:
“I’d been listening to some old sea songs and shanties recorded in the 1950s by Peter Kennedy, in particular a shanty called ‘Hanging Johnny’. I’d also spent some time at sea myself, so I think the combination of these things was having an affect on my noggin, to try and write something resembling a shanty.
To begin with, all I had was the line “when the fog comes in” and a couple of chords, and I just sort of improvised a few other lines. I thought it was going to be about how disconcerting fog can be at sea, even more so than foul weather. Then I sat down with the guitar one evening and the whole thing came out at once, all the words and chords together, in almost as much time as it takes to play through the song.
It doesn’t happen like that for me very often, and I wasn’t even sure where it came from.
I think it works on a number of levels; it’s a fun sea shanty sung by a bunch of old salts, but it’s also a song about paranoia.”

lyrics
When The Fog Comes In
When the fog comes in I’ll be blowin on my whistle
One step, two step, keep a careful listen
Dodgin’ de bullets and hidin’ in duh porridge
I’m not the man that they seem to think I am
Away – aye – ay – aye – oh! When the fog comes in
When the fog comes in I’ll be bangin’ on my drum
Out with the old brain, in with the new
Voices in my head tell me what to do
But it’s my voice Lord... message coming through
Away – aye – ay – aye – oh! When the fog comes in
When the fog comes in I’ll be stampin’ ‘n’ a-clappin’
Washed my hands of the whole damn affair
Wasn’t always easy not to have a care
Feelin’ kind-a-twitchy, got my finger on the trigger
Away – aye – ay – aye – oh! When the fog comes in
Boom bang bang, boom bang bang, boom bang bang, boom
It’s over
Boom bang-a-bang, boom bang-a-bang, boom bang-a-bang, boom
It’s over... It’s over...
Away – aye – ay – aye – oh! When the fog comes in
When the fog comes in I’ll be ringing on my bell
I’m seeing things now that I know are not there
White lights and shadows play tricks on my noggin
Insect and spider, He get everyWHERE!
Away – aye – ay – aye – oh! When the fog comes in
When the fog comes in, the fog comes in
